DC224 Spring 17: Give and Take - garry.bledsoe (Mar 25, 2010, 7:45 pm) |
A Lot of Repositioning In Storytime
Rogues and Undead Trade Positions After a Fashion - Time Will Tell Who Got the Better
Everyone Arrays VERY Defensively
A Naval Battle for the Ages Wages In Razor's Edge But The Ogren Navy Stands Firm
An Ogre Solo is Proposed
All,
We do have some retreats:
Undead F Timberlands can retreat to Istar or SAVAGE SEA.
Rogue F ZEBOIMS DEEP can retreat to Pwyll.
Troll F BABEL BEACH can retreat to SEA OF FALLEN STARS or Golgafrincham.
Obviously any of these can also go OTB.
Let's get retreats in by Saturday at 6pm CST (although I may not get to the adjudication until Sunday...I am moving this weekend to a new house).
From there, we will set Fall 17 as Friday April 2nd at 6pm CST.
Our vote will occur with Fall orders although I am certain that it is likely to fail given what I know of the players here.
Please double-check these - the Ogres in particular as there was an order for a non-existant A in Hoarluk and missing orders for two other A's.
Please yell with concerns (and, NO, "parlay" is not an acceptable yell!).

Hoffman, would you be ok w a draw here? I'd say w the loss of WTH your chances of breaking this stalemate are gone. You're not even bothering to order a lot of your units any more.

I ordered all the units I needed to order, and one additional unit I didn't have. You telling me that not ordering Mt Nimro cost me anything? Come on.
Anyway, I'm willing to draw, but not right now. And I voted NO to the Ogre Solo, just to prove my point that a draw is my intention, but I want it down to a 4-way at best. Same as I've said all along.

All,
We do have some retreats:

Oh come on Mike, who do you want out? You tell me you want an R/O/P, so what of the Faeries, Trolls and Undead? Will you state publicly the R/O/P is your goal, or is that just what you tell me privately? I like to play for a good ending as much as anyone, but any stabs in the northern 4 will lead to an Ogre solo, so we're left w a stalemate. Last time we talked you said something like "Suzanne knows what I really want". If that's the case then surely she doesnt really want an R/O/P, cuz I'm sure she's want my head on a stake. So then why make up the fake offers to me?

To be fair... he said I was the one who knows what he really wants... so that wouldn't leave the R/O/P out of the question.
Personally, I'm just happy to still be in this game. What was looking really grim when I thought I had a O/T coming at me has turn into discussions of whether or not to include me in the draw? Fascinating.
Anyway, here's to finding a solution we can all live with.

Fine, you want all the draw proposals out here?
Rogues: R/O/P, R/O/T, R/O/U you said no to them all.
Undead: O/U, or O/U/*
Trolls: O/T, O/U/T, O/U/T/P
Pirates: O/P, O/U/P, and once O/R/P.
But everyone was also told that O/U were connected at the hip, at least until R/F split up. I even offered to pull my fleets back away from F so that you could stab and I couldn't possibly gain from it. But you said NO and claimed it would destabilize the center. I don't see how if I wasn't in position to stab, but you've got a better sight on this game than I do. After all, you've been screaming about an Ogre Solo since I took out the Wizards.
So public show of hands now: Do you all want a draw????

DC224 Spring 17: Give and Take (dc224) FuzzyLogic Mar 26, 06:23 pm |
You know the common theme to every one of those proposals? “O”. The Ogres are the only power who have never been on the defensive, nor had a moment of “I may actually not be in the draw”. The Ogres have had nothing but constant steady growth from an unattackable position. Yet you play kingmaker like you’re the one who gets to decide who shares the draw. When in reality it doesn’t matter who accepts your offer, you just need to keep someone attacking someone so you can continue your growth into whatever hole opens up as a result.

I ordered all the units I needed to order, and one additional unit I didn't have. You telling me that not ordering Mt Nimro cost me anything? Come on.
Anyway, I'm willing to draw, but not right now. And I voted NO to the Ogre Solo, just to prove my point that a draw is my intention, but I want it down to a 4-way at best. Same as I've said all along.

All,
We do have some retreats:
Undead F Timberlands can retreat to Istar or SAVAGE SEA.
Rogue F ZEBOIMS DEEP can retreat to Pwyll.
Troll F BABEL BEACH can retreat to SEA OF FALLEN STARS or Golgafrincham.
Obviously any of these can also go OTB. Error! Filename not specified.

You'd rather flog a dead horse of a game than accept that all of us remaining save the Dwarves have fought and earned our place in the draw?
Where are your great gains going to come from should the rest of us stop fighting? The only one with many SCs vulnerable to you is the Undead. And they are not sufficient in quantity for you to win.

HA! Would you expect me to propose a draw that did NOT include
myself? That is laughable to the highest degree.
I mean no offense by that, but seriously, show me the logic behind
anything else.
Kingmaker? No. That implies a threat if non-compliance is the chosen
path. No, I simply am lookign for a way to come to a final draw that
includes less than 1/4 of the original players. In standard dip, I
rarely accept a 3-way (or more) Draw for the exact same reasons.
Before this gets ugly, let's call it a day and wait for the next turn to finish.

DC 298 Fall 1911 adjucation - untitled36 (Mar 25, 2010, 4:32 pm) |
Bad news team.
I asked the powers that be about the draw because I wanted to make sure Turkey could be a part of the draw since he would have units but no centers. That wouldn't have been a problem in a typical game they said, but in the blitz the powers that be said draws can only occur on a spring or fall turn, not winter or summer. So it looks like the draw vote will have to wait till monday, and at that point Turkey would be ineligible because he wouldn't have any units left (sorry!). So I'll use my GM powers and change the draw proposal to a F/I/R/E draw with NO turkish survival, and it's due on monday.
Sorry about that guys. Just trying to follow the rules!
John

.ExternalClass .ecxhmmessage P {padding:0px;} .ExternalClass body.ecxhmmessage {font-size:10pt;font-family:Verdana;} Hey all,
We got our first true End Game Proposal this turn. An I/R/E/F 4-way draw has been proposed (with Turkey still technically getting a survival). Votes due with Winter orders! No response counts as a no vote!
Move-wise, we have the official demise of Germany and Turkey's last units faces immediate extinction in the winter. France and Italy come to blows in the western med region, but the fleets bounce.
In a suprise move, Russia and France resolve their differences, and combine forces to usher the english into Berlin. Russia also kicks France out of Vienna, thus requiring france to lose a unit in the winter.
As far as retreats go, we've got three, and each has only one available option, so I auto-adjucated. For france, Ber-pru and vie-Boh. For turkey, Ank-Arm. OTB is also an option of course, and if you want that it's due with the winter season.

I received no objections to a shorter turnaround for this Spring.
So Spring 1905 orders deadline is Monday, Mar 29 at 17:00 GMT.
Please note that many European countries (incl. mine) will move to Summertime this weekend. That's in real life, to avoid confusion
One hour less sleep and as of Sunday +1 hour time difference with the USA, i.e. one extra hour to submit your orders.
Not sure how this affects Asia though.

Okay...I know! I am probably carrying the "I told you so" too far but it IS a LOT of fun for me! What a game! I love the twists. You guys are putting on quite a battle.
To business - we have several retreats due:
Undead F To-Gai-Ru can retreat to ALL SAINTS BAY.
Troll F Enchanted Isles can retreat to BABEL BEACH.
Undead F ZEBOIMS DEEP can retreat to SAVAGE SEA or Pwyll (technically also ALL SAINTS BAY but
that is the ONLY option for F To-Gai-Ru so...)
Of course any of these can retreat OTB. Basically I will need one Undead retreat given that all of the others have one option.
The deadline for that is Sunday night at 8pm CST. I will be out of town for the weekend so I can't get it out sooner. From there we will have a quick deadline for Winter, Tuesday the 9th at 6pm CST. From there we will have an extended Spring 17 turn due to a player vacation (details on that with Winter).
PLEASE double-check. As you have no doubt noticed your GM is quite capable of mistakes!
NICK - thanks for filling in and fighting on until the end! On that note...a bit from our dearly departed Knight...
PRESS
Barring a miracle, goodbye from the Knights! This position was weak when I took it over, but I managed to stay alive by mending ties with the Archers as we fought off the Rogues/Faeries/Trolls. I tried to split up that trio, but only really got replies from Michael (the Rogues), and although there was willingness on both sides to find some solution, he was too committed already to an attack on me, and there was no real way for us to ally as long as he was unwilling to break his alliance with the Faeries.
To my surprise, the Trolls suddenly stabbed the Rogues, and a thin beam of light appeared at the end of the previously pitch-black tunnel. There was a critical moment when some Troll support in the top right part of the board could have shifted the balance to our side, as the Faeries and Rogues were relatively weak here and there was pressure from the underground on Dragons Teeth Mts. A breakthrough to Kingdom of Hearts could have allowed me and the Archers to hold on indefinitely. There wasn't much communication, and Warren decided instead to devote his units to the top-left part of the board in Anvard and Immoren, trying to destroy the Rogue position here. The Archers were knocked out, and then the top right part of the board from Cathal to Andarien Plain got rolled up by the Faeries/Rogues, and it was only a matter of time for the Knights.

DC310:Umbra - Gamestart - Samnuva (Mar 25, 2010, 1:22 pm) |
Ladies and Gentlemen, welcome to DC310: Umbra. This briefing is classified top secret and contains sensitive information, and is not to be repeated or discussed outside this room. At 02:00 Hours this morning, a coordinated assassination was carried out on seven nations across this continent by members of an ancient terrorist faction. You seven individuals have been selected to lead these now leaderless nations to greatness in the coming years. We do not know how history will look back on us, but one thing is for certain: Some will be victorious, while others will fall, defeated into the forgotten annals of time. My name is Sam Buck, and I will be your operations officer. I will be your senior military commander, carrying out your orders and relaying the results back to you. Due to the complexities of this task, there will be deadlines upon which I must know your final decision regarding your troops. If one or more of you neglect to send me orders, even after a reminder, I will have no choice to order your units to hold and to place a NMR credit on your record. In the event that you accumulate 3 such credits, I will be forced to seek a replacement for your office. This is a great task before you, but I have no doubt that all of you will accomplish it well. It is now my duty to provide you your assignments.
Replacing His Imperial and Royal Apostolic Majesty, Emperor Franz Joseph I of Austria is Robert Choi, contactable at Robert.choi(at)invescotrimark.com. Good Luck, Mr. Choi. Austria is counting on you.
Taking over the throne for His Majesty the King Edward VII of England is Adam Janis, email alliancedata(at)yahoo.com. We wish you the best of luck, sir. England depends on it.
Representing the French Parliament will be Steven Hu, at steven.by.hu(at)hotmail.com. France is yours. Sir. Treat her well.
In the place of His Imperial and Royal Majesty Wilhelm the Second, by the Grace of God, German Emperor shall be Doegred Winsterhand, diplomatic offices located at feanorsfirstborn(at)gmail.com. Good luck to you, Kaiser.
Taking for himself the crown vacated by King Victor Emmanuel III of Italy, Kolin Loconti, kolinloconti(at)gmail.com, will become the newest Italian Monarch. Again, good luck, sir.
In the East, replacing His Imperial Majesty Czar Nicholas II, Emperor and Autocrat of all the Russias, we have Lee Clark, leeaclark(at)btinternet.com. Russia is under your command. ??????????.
Finally, in the southeast corner, taking over for His Imperial Majesty, the Sultan Abdulhamid II, Emperor of the Ottomans, is Stu Hobbs,stuhobbs(at)gmail.com. Fight Well, Turkey relies on it.
Ladies and Gentlemen, you have your orders. You know the rules, you know how the game is played. The first deadline for your spring 1901 orders is Tuesday, April 6th, 2010, at 23:59 GMT (7:00 EST). In the future, your individual times will be sent out, but that is not yet ready. THis will be a fast paced game, with years going by in about a week and a half. If you need an extension, ask for one. If you must leave the game, tell me. If you have any other questions, I am here. Other than that, I wish you all luck. You shall need it.
-Sam BuckYour GM

Hi guys,
Jorge has retracted his resignation and since that step was never of my own choosing, I've welcomed him back with immediate effect.
As such, we shall proceed on to the Fall 1655 Moves this coming Monday, 29 March. I trust that remaining on schedule allows for ample time. Please send me your preliminary orders no later than Saturday, should you not have already done so.
Cheers,

DC 298 Fall 1911 adjucation - untitled36 (Mar 25, 2010, 8:21 am) |
Hey all,
We got our first true End Game Proposal this turn.

DC 298 Fall 1911 adjucation (Winter Blitz) untitled36 Mar 25, 04:32 pm |
John

OH MY GOD!!!!
This isn't just Mike Sims...this is the fabled POOBALOO!!! I can now see that all hope is lost. I hereby propose that we simply give Poobaloo his next solo win and then just get on with our mundane lives.
All hail Poobaloo,
I am not worthy to cast my eyes upon your infinite greatness,
Oh heck...I have an idea...as MY position has now become hopeless, what say I let you guys vote on who will control ny pieces in the coming turn...

I too would like to add my thanks for Maslow starting off wuth us...
I wanted to wait until the GM made it official...because
I do so hate it when players attempt to influence the goings on of a game with cheap theatrical group e-mails to the GM.
Get better soon.
Joe
P.S. - Wait. How do we know that this isn't a cheap theatrical trick?
How do we know that Mike isn't really Maslow in disguise?
Only one way to be sure...Mike...and I am going to need you to trust me on this...I need to get one of my armies to Tuscany. Tell you what...Let me have Venice in the Spring and then I will move to TUS
in the Fall.
Maslow would never have fallen for such a thinly veiled disguise.

Hello everyone. As you may have heard, Alex has come down with a flu and is abdicating his Italian thrown. Thanks for playing Alex, hope you enjoyed the game, and get better soon!
Taking over Italy is the one and only Michael Sims! Welcome Mike, glad to have you. With a new player in the mix, I will extend the deadline to Monday, March 29th, 9:00pm EST
I'm sorry for those of you who didn't have any builds and are ready to go, but I just want to make a smooth transition. Don't get sloppy on me now with the deadlines, I want everyone to get them in on time so that I don't need to track down anybody.
And Mike, if you have any questions on my rules let me know. One grace period per person.
Have a good rest of your week, and get those orders in. And if you had already sent me orders, if you could resend them that would help me out greatly. Thanks!

I wanted to wait until the GM made it official...because

Get better soon.

Thanks!

How could the world go back to the way it was when so much bad had happened? But in the end, it's only a passing thing. The shadow, even the darkness must pass. A new day will come. And when the sun shines it will shine out the clearer. Those were the stories that stayed with you - That meant something. Even if you were too small to understand why. I asked this question in a previous email and have not received an answer:
If Abo has no coasts, then it cannot force a break in Ing's coasts either
(ala Swe / Den in Standard). If Ing has no coasts, what the heck does it
need a Canal for???? I have never seen a Dip board produced with such a
flagrant redundancy built in. The existence of the canal obviously shows
that the designers made Ing with separate coasts.... and thus Abo must have
separate coasts as well.
Mike, Ingria has a canal (well, actually the river Neva) flowing through it.
Much as say the Kaiser-Wilhelm-Canal runs through Kiel in Standard, or the
Suez Canal runs through Suez in the 1900 variant. Neither space is bicoastal
in nature. So I don't understand your point in the least.
Charles
My point is this: If Ing is bi-coastal, what breaks it's coastline?
Abo, right? Therefore, Abo MUST be bi-coastal as well.
In the case of Kiel & Denmark, Denmark is not bi-coastal because of
its *other* connection, the one to Sweden. That connection is
considered 'fleet passable' and thus both Sweden and Denmark have
single coastlines. However, IF that connection was more solid and
Sweden became bi-coastal, then Denmark would also be bi-coastal,
because the canal runs inside of Kiel.
Thus, the Abo/Ing connection is the same thing. Ing contains the
canal to allow it to act as a single coast province, it's coast breaks
being Abo and whatever is south of it (map not open right now). But
that land connection with Abo **prevents Abo from being single
coastal**!!!
If you claim that Abo is single-coastal, then the border between Ing &
Abo becomes 'fleet passable' (like Den & Swe). So Ing becomes single
coastal ---- and thus no need for the canal.
It's just logic.

Mike,
I recognise and wrote that Abo's character ought to be further explained in the variant rules. I rely on playtesters to point out what points need to be further specified/clarified. As a designer, one tends to be less aware of what isn't obvious since one's too close to the design. Catching these shortcomings is part of what one hopes to achieve with a playtest and I'm grateful to those who've contributed to the improvement of the variant in this manner.
As I mentioned in my previous email, I use the DC Variants page for descriptions. It includes a very detailed point about Ingria, never mentioning Denmark or Standard Dip:
"Ingria is a canal province (much as Copenhagen), thus allowing units to move from Abo, Lake Ladoga, the Gulf of Bothnia, Novgorod (South Coast) and Riga to Ingria (and vice versa). The River Neva is shown on the map to indicate this."
Basically, if an analogy to Standard is to be made, it should be to CON, not to DEN. Thus CON allows units to pass through, but BUL has coasts.
Yes, I got the nomenclature wrong. I meant Denmark. Thanks for pointing that out.

Hi guys,
from what I gather, Jorge has communicated to you players separately his resigning from the game. He cited in his correspondence with me his dissatisfaction over Abo/Lake Ladoga.
Now, the current variant rules do state that Ingria works much as Denmark in Standard Diplomacy. That logically also entails that Abo functions much the same as Sweden does in Standard.
Hence, there are no coastal specifications for Abo on the big map I sent to all players upon starting the game. Realpolitik's adjucation output equally expressly does not list any coasts for Abo as a careful reading of the fall adjucation shows.
I recognise that the variant rules would benefit from a more explicit statement beyond pointing to the Denmark analogy. For what is obvious to a designer may not be to playtesters (a frequent phenomenon in the rules-writing process). Actually, pointing out such room for improvement is indeed to a large extent what playtesting's about and my variants have benefited from such helpful playtester input. I regret Jorge plainly doesn't share that outlook.
Jorge has equally reproached me for not clarifying this situation to him beforehand. However, as it so happens I did actually note at least once in a mail to him prior to game-start that:
"Systematically, [the addition of Lake Ladoga as a space] means that Karelia will have two coasts, whereas Abo will still only have one (much as Standard's Sweden despite a canal space touching it in the middle)."
I'm sorry Jorge no longer remembered that. In light of the extensive variant design discussions Jorge has participated in in the past, I was not aware of his erroneous assumption/lapse of memory. Otherwise I would have of course again stressed that point in my communications to him, much as I notify any player whenever I notice such an issue. I don't spot all such issues, but I do try.
Suffice to say that I consider these illegitimate grounds for abandoning a game and am sorely disappointed.
Now, this means I shall seek a Polish replacement. Once I've sent out this summer adjucation, I shall immediately contact DC's replacement list and advertise the position more generally on the site. Lets hope we shall have a replacement before long. As soon as a replacement has materialised, I shall set a new deadline that affords the new Pole sufficient time to negotiate.
My hope is we'll be back on track before to long.
Cheers,
Charles
