The final supply center counts are as follows:
Austria: 6 centers, survival
England: 11 centers, part of 2-way draw
France: eliminated 1907
Germany: eliminated 1908 Italy: eliminated 1906
Russia: 6 centers, survival

Russia's march through Europe continues with the capture of Gal and Bel, While it appears Austria has completely turned on her former ally, helping a Fench fleet into the Western Med. In addition to fall orders, another Russia/Austria draw has been proposed. Pleas submit your votes with fall. We have two Russian retreats, A Burgundy and F Clyde. Warren, I'll put out summer as soon as I get your orders.

DC305 - 1901 Fall - ignite107   (Mar 17, 2010, 5:12 pm)
A very interesting battle out in Western Europe.  We see the Germans refused entry into both Belgium and Holland.  One must wonder whether or not that was a coordinated effort or simply just blind luck?  Around the Adriatic the Austrians storm the beaches of Trieste to retrieve their territory.  Forcing the Italians out of Trieste at least.  Who knows where he'll retreat.  The rest of the world remains quiet.  Only time will tell.

DC-273 NNIGTFML Venezuelan EoG - TheWhiteWolf   (Mar 17, 2010, 4:52 pm)
Guys,
I agree with Jack - I made a mistake in attempting to hit Brazil prematurely. However, there was no NMR to spur me to attack. There was an aggressive an uncommunicative Brazilian heading for my centers. Once I saw that lime green fleet sail north, I knew it was only a matter of time before armies followed. I thought I'd be okay if I could get the jump on him. Unfortunately, I fell for Fredrik's ruse to work together, and headed back toward Colombia while Fredrik took center after center behind me. The man is a brilliant tactician! If only he had devoted more attention south, instead of toward eliminating the holdouts to his north. Good game everyone, congratulations to that guy with a G name down south, and thank you to Fredrik for an amazing exercise in tactics and survival. I look forward to seeing you all again in the near future - especially my main rival!

NNIGTFML - Game End - Solo! - FlapJack   (Mar 17, 2010, 4:12 pm)
EOG for Peru:

Since the designer has already acknowledged, this design needs work, so I won't bother complaining about how unbalanced it is and just skip a head to my perspective on the game.

I thought that there would be more diplomacy among the three northern powers, e.g. Peru, Columbia and Venzula. Once the game started and looked over the map I realized that there really wasn't much room to negotiate as Columbia, unlike Venezuela and Peru, has no where to go. My plan then was to take out Columbia quickly with Venezuela and it appeared to work until Brazil NMRed.

I think Venezuela got distracted by Brazil's NMR and decided to attack Brazill--the bigger long term threat before we finished with Columbia. At the time I thought it was a mistake for both Venezuela's future as well as mine and I was unfortunately correct.

Congrats to all who survived and the winner, although this is one of the most unbalanced variants I've seen actually played to a conclusion.

NNIGTFML - Game End - Solo! (dc273) rodtheworm Mar 17, 06:21 pm
Columbia having nowhere else to go does make this map a little less balanced, as has been said, but to me that's only in as far as Turkey can only really hit either Russia or Austria initially. I'd advise putting the Panama canal in (even if it wouldn't actually be completed for another 80-odd years) just because of the expanded tactical options it gives.

I suppose as a replacement playing only 5 of the 12 years I missed out on the early negotiations where the really juicy stuff got sorted out. My primary goal for this game was to survive, which I happily did - in fact, I was surprised at the come back Columbia made in ending the game in second place, though I suspect it was more by luck and outside circumstances than by skill on my own part. Had Venezuela not been distracted by Brasil, I expect I would have made a quick exit, and though I was pleased to outmanoeuvre Peru in the two years or so after joining, I'm very aware that I only just got the block up in the south to fend off Chile's fleets as it was. If that conflict had gone on a few more years Chile would have been pushing through there handily.

I'd like to point out that, in pursuit of this survival I allowed myself to be more ruthless in making promises or agreeing to alliances and breaking them, or manipulating others with no intention of reciprocating. My play is not normally like this, so if we meet in a future game, please don't assume I'll be untrustworthy there too! Usually I'd say I'm more inclined to be a straight talker than the average player, perhaps to my detriment as a diplomat. Maybe I should learn from success in this game!

Further on the issue of balance, I think all the southern 2-centre powers get a very raw deal. Bolivia has no guaranteed gains, and is practically thrown right into the fray against Chile from the outset as Golfo de Guafo borders a home centre for both. Paraguay gets a slightly nore prosperous first year, but then is likely to come under heavy attack from the much larger Brasil, whil Argentina seems to be the Austria - nice initial growth potential, but in between lots of powers.
In the north, Venezuela probably gets two early builds to sit it on four centres and a comfortable size, though all four of these countries suffer the disadvantage of only being able to build two units a turn, which presumably can become important as the game goes on and powers are capable of taking many centres in a turn.

Compare this with the rich earlygrowth potential of Brasil and Columbia. Brasil probably get 2 or 3 builds putting it on 5 or 6 centres, with a good offensive and defensive position and but a nasty case of early leader syndrome. Columbia should really be getting two centres in the first year (if not, why not?), ideally putting it on 5 to Venezuela's 4 and Peru's 3. As seen, these two can then team up on Columbia, but I don't think his position is any worse than a Russia with England and Turkey looking at him with hostility. In fact, I still think a bit of deft play could see Peru repelled with an extra fleet, while Venezuela is stalled in the north with the remaining fleet and army. Another build could see that flank becoming increasingly secure.

In my opinion, tactical play really starts working at four units and above, which I think is why all countries in Standard (bar England in the case of an aggressively northward-looking Russian) have at least one centre they can claim without contest. With two, you basically have to guess whether or not to risk an opponent taking your home centre or not. I think in the average game, the starting differences in size are more likely to magnify rather than equalise.

Hopefully that's helped!

so basically as far as peru is concerned--if venz won't help him take down col he's screwed? that doesn't sound very interesting to me so i still think the north needs work..peru has no real chance to go after columbia on his own..as you saw in this game...you had an extra build on me and the only chance peru has is to out guess columbia...i did not...i suppose i could have take less chances and probably survived but why? so we can both stay at 3 or 4 centers until another neighbor shows up to gobble us up from behind--I choose to be more aggressive figuring it wouldn't work unless you NMRed or made a big mistake since you had a much better positon with regards to builds in the beginning than i did..it didn't work wouldn't have mattered as somoene coming up from the south would have taken me out sooner or later...

i also agree with your take on the center powers and argentina...brazil is much too powerful in this game---it is like russia but brazil has a lot more territory to protect it than russia does in regular dip...paraguay and boliva are  kind of like italy/austria except they don't have a motherload of centers near by like i/a do in regular dip...i would put brazil's dots closer to the aciton and add some centers up north and in the center...i would also lower the andes wall up north altogether....let col/ven/per go at it....

NNIGTFML - Game End - Solo! (dc273) Kenshi777 Mar 17, 10:32 pm

EOG for Peru:

Since the designer has already acknowledged, this design needs work, so I
won't bother complaining about how unbalanced it is and just skip a head to
my perspective on the game.

***Yes, but your specific thoughts on how to improve it are most
welcome, and may well be incorporated into revisions aimed at
balancing it out...

I thought that there would be more diplomacy among the three northern
powers, e.g. Peru, Columbia and Venzula. Once the game started and looked
over the map I realized that there really wasn't much room to negotiate as
Columbia, unlike Venezuela and Peru, has no where to go. My plan then was to
take out Columbia quickly with Venezuela and it appeared to work until
Brazil NMRed.

***This is surprising - while PeVe vs. Co certainly is a good alliance
option, I thought with Colombia's fleets split, they could choose to
attack one way, and use the other fleet (on the other side of Panama)
as a bargaining chip to help their ally on the other side. Just one
Colombian fleet should be enough to help Venezuela overcome the
Brasilian navy, or Peru overcome the Bolivia. Do you disagree that
this (intended) dynamic exists, or was it not considered? If it does
not exist, why not, and what can be done to accomplish that?***

I think Venezuela got distracted by Brazil's NMR and decided to attack
Brazill--the bigger long term threat before we finished with Columbia. At
the time I thought it was a mistake for both Venezuela's future as well as
mine and I was unfortunately correct.

Congrats to all who survived and the winner, although this is one of the
most unbalanced variants I've seen actually played to a conclusion.

***My apologies for that. I am willing to make significant revisions
to improve it - to include removing the Andes rule, redrawing
provinces entirely, or changing the starting unit/home SC assignments
- your thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Further on the issue of balance, I think all the southern 2-centre powers
get a very raw deal.

***Agreed. I think all 2 SC powers on the map will be increased to 3
actually. There are a lot of reasons why having 2 SCs to start is a
bad thing.

Bolivia has no guaranteed gains,

***...a reason I am strongly considering removing the Andes rule -
would this help, along with a 3rd SC to start?

and is practically

thrown right into the fray against Chile from the outset as Golfo de Guafo
borders a home centre for both.

***...true, but this has the added effect of making Chile think twice
about dogpiling Argentina with Paraguay. I would like to retain that
dynamic, even if this particular sea zone does get redrawn.

Paraguay gets a slightly nore prosperous

first year, but then is likely to come under heavy attack from the much
larger Brasil, whil Argentina seems to be the Austria - nice initial growth
potential, but in between lots of powers.

***I always thought of Paraguay as the Austria - perhaps with a third
SC (maybe a fleet?) this will be better.

In the north, Venezuela probably gets two early builds to sit it on four
centres and a comfortable size

***Not sure if this is a given - doesn't Colombia at least consider F
Car - SaM/GDa and A Bog - Lla?

, though all four of these countries suffer > the disadvantage of only
being able to build two units a turn, which > presumably can become
important as the game goes on and powers are capable > of taking many
centres in a turn.

***Agreed - all two SC powers must go. This is doable.

Compare this with the rich earlygrowth potential of Brasil and Columbia.
Brasil probably get 2 or 3 builds putting it on 5 or 6 centres, with a good
offensive and defensive position and but a nasty case of early leader
syndrome. Columbia should really be getting two centres in the first year
(if not, why not?), ideally putting it on 5 to Venezuela's 4 and Peru's 3.

***Peru is given only to have 3? Why not Iquitos and either Galapagos
or Arica? Especially if Bolivia and Chile are destined to fight over
GdG? Not to say that the fight in GdG is not a good thing if it's
forced, but still - I see Peru as a strong candidate to get 4.
Peru/Bolivia should be a strong alliance option, even as the map is.

As seen, these two can then team up on Columbia, but I don't think his
position is any worse than a Russia with England and Turkey looking at him
with hostility. In fact, I still think a bit of deft play could see Peru
repelled with an extra fleet, while Venezuela is stalled in the north with
the remaining fleet and army. Another build could see that flank becoming
increasingly secure.

***True - Peru is disadvantaged. How would A Iquitos as a starting
SC/unit do to help with that?

In my opinion, tactical play really starts working at four units and above,
which I think is why all countries in Standard (bar England in the case of
an aggressively northward-looking Russian) have at least one centre they can
claim without contest. With two, you basically have to guess whether or not
to risk an opponent taking your home centre or not. I think in the average
game, the starting differences in size are more likely to magnify rather
than equalise.

***Agreed.

[quote:dd395c8c8f]Hopefully that's helped!

Jason - I very much *would* like to hear your balance issues
please...being tactful about it is appreciated, but don't sugarcoat it
- better to have a balanced variant and wounded pride than another
variant in the nobody-plays-it graveyard...

I won't go into my balance issues, any variant has them, this one's are

worse, right Mike?
Anyway, it was well played by all, good job! I just can't believe it went

ross,

so basically as far as peru is concerned--if venz won't help him take down
col he's screwed? that doesn't sound very interesting to me so i still think
the north needs work..peru has no real chance to go after columbia on his
own..as you saw in this game...you had an extra build on me and the only
chance peru has is to out guess columbia...i did not...i suppose i could
have take less chances and probably survived but why? so we can both stay at
3 or 4 centers until another neighbor shows up to gobble us up from
behind--I choose to be more aggressive figuring it wouldn't work unless you
NMRed or made a big mistake since you had a much better positon with regards
to builds in the beginning than i did..it didn't work wouldn't have mattered
as somoene coming up from the south would have taken me out sooner or
later...

i also agree with your take on the center powers and argentina...brazil is
much too powerful in this game---it is like russia but brazil has a lot more
territory to protect it than russia does in regular dip...paraguay and
boliva are kind of like italy/austria except they don't have a motherload
of centers near by like i/a do in regular dip...i would put brazil's dots
closer to the aciton and add some centers up north and in the center...i
would also lower the andes wall up north altogether....let col/ven/per go at
it....

[quote:c5a242436b]Columbia having nowhere else to go does make this map a little less
balanced, as has been said, but to me that's only in as far as Turkey can
only really hit either Russia or Austria initially. I'd advise putting
the Panama canal in (even if it wouldn't actually be completed for
another 80-odd years) just because of the expanded tactical options it
gives.

I suppose as a replacement playing only 5 of the 12 years I missed out on
the early negotiations where the really juicy stuff got sorted out. My
primary goal for this game was to survive, which I happily did - in fact,
I was surprised at the come back Columbia made in ending the game in
second place, though I suspect it was more by luck and outside
circumstances than by skill on my own part. Had Venezuela not been
distracted by Brasil, I expect I would have made a quick exit, and though
I was pleased to outmanoeuvre Peru in the two years or so after joining,
I'm very aware that I only just got the block up in the south to fend off
Chile's fleets as it was. If that conflict had gone on a few more years
Chile would have been pushing through there handily.

I'd like to point out that, in pursuit of this survival I allowed myself
to be more ruthless in making promises or agreeing to alliances and
breaking them, or manipulating others with no intention of reciprocating.
My play is not normally like this, so if we meet in a future game,
please don't assume I'll be untrustworthy there too! Usually I'd say I'm
more inclined to be a straight talker than the average player, perhaps to
my detriment as a diplomat. Maybe I should learn from success in this
game!

Further on the issue of balance, I think all the southern 2-centre powers
get a very raw deal. Bolivia has no guaranteed gains, and is practically
thrown right into the fray against Chile from the outset as Golfo de
Guafo borders a home centre for both. Paraguay gets a slightly nore
prosperous first year, but then is likely to come under heavy attack from
the much larger Brasil, whil Argentina seems to be the Austria - nice
initial growth potential, but in between lots of powers.

In the north, Venezuela probably gets two early builds to sit it on four
centres and a comfortable size, though all four of these countries suffer
the disadvantage of only being able to build two units a turn, which
presumably can become important as the game goes on and powers are capable
of taking many centres in a turn.

Compare this with the rich earlygrowth potential of Brasil and Columbia.
Brasil probably get 2 or 3 builds putting it on 5 or 6 centres, with a
good offensive and defensive position and but a nasty case of early
leader syndrome. Columbia should really be getting two centres in the
first year (if not, why not?), ideally putting it on 5 to Venezuela's 4
and Peru's 3. As seen, these two can then team up on Columbia, but I
don't think his position is any worse than a Russia with England and
Turkey looking at him with hostility. In fact, I still think a bit of
deft play could see Peru repelled with an extra fleet, while Venezuela is
stalled in the north with the remaining fleet and army. Another build

We're finally able to run the Spring
1902 turn, and there's lots of action across the
board.  Russia seems to be really under the cosh,
losing St Petersburg and Sevastopol to a combination of
Turkish, Austrian and English aggression, and ordering a
support that isn't taken up.  One consolation is he
forces Austria out of Galicia.  In the west, england
takes Holland, destorying the German army in the process,
whilst Italy and France rearrange their forces.

A retreat is needed from Austria - Austrian A Galicia can
retreat to Budapest or Vienna or Bohemia or Silesia or
OTB.  Can I have this retreat by Thursday 18th March
2100 GMT.  If I receive it earlier than that, I'll run
the turn earlier and adjust the Fall deadline accordingly.

Thanks

Michael

DC301 - TTP - Autumn 1900 Map - douglasefresh at googl...   (Mar 17, 2010, 3:59 am)
Proffeseur Griffe sipped his coffee and cast his eyes over the beautifully crafted  map in front of him. Aside from its' main feature, the map room of the League of Shadows was sparsely furnished and gloomy, a few sombre wooden chairs lined the ancient bare stone walls. In the centre, however, spanning a table top measuring fifteen feet by twenty; a detailed map of Europe was brightly illuminated by lamps, suspended by heavy chains from the low ceiling of the catacomb.

The Commander of the secret organisation leaned slowly forward and nodded to a hovering adjutant. The subordinate obeyed the silent order and hurriedly removed one of the carved wooden pieces from Bulgaria and returned it to its' box.

Blitzers,

The winter comes around, and we now have a full complement of units on the board as Austria builds an Army.

We also have two special announcements this season:
1. I will go skiing next week, so Garry, out Winter Blitz guru will take over the adjudications next week. Please make sure you send all orders to Garry next week: kielmarch-at-hotmail.com (kielmarch-at-hotmail.com). I'll take this moment to remind you that you should also copy the orders box with all orders: orders-at-diplomaticcorp.com (orders-at-diplomaticcorp.com). Garry, if you want to change the time when the orders are due, please change them to whatever suits you better.

2. We have another proposal on the table as well: A two way draw between Austria and Russia. The votes are due with the Spring movement.

Next turn: Spring 1910 Movement.

[b]Next Deadline: Monday, 15th of March 2010, 19:00 GMT (7PM).

TTP - DC301 - Fall 1900 Maps - douglasefresh at googl...   (Mar 16, 2010, 3:38 pm)
Agent Fresh handed over control of his unit of Budapestian horsemen to the Lieutenant and rode briskly across the yards of the Hofstallungen and into the main stable building. The Third Yugolslav Army had established control of Vienna's industrial centre and Agent Fresh had been spending as much time relaxing and collating his reports as he had been drilling his new command.

The rest of Tesarik's forces had been heavily engaged however - and though bitter fighting had seen the Turks hold on to Greece, Tesarik himself had utilised the support of the Russians in Rumania and led the First Army into Bulgaria. Whether the Turkish Army had been decimated or managed to retreat to their capital remained to be seen.

Conflict had also exploded on the Northern half of Fresh's map as the last free strongholds or Europe had fallen to the sword of its' rising new powers. Despite capturing Munich and Berlin, Greater Hannover had lost three centres to the United Kingdom and to the Frankish Goths. Russia indeed had not been idle: As well as colluding with the Yugoslavians, She had sent the majority of her forces to the North, taking Norway from the UKGBS and snatching freedom from the people of Warsaw.

********************************

Dear Players,

An action-packed turn as we finally rid any vestige of neutrality from the map and get to the meat of the game.
A Bul may retreat to Constantinople or OTB (Off The Board)
I shall publish the new Supply Centre count with the Autumn map (which will show the retreat), but you may feel free to deduce yourselves whether or not you shall gain a build and send it to me as soon as possible. The retreat is due to me in 24 hours (roughly 8pm GMT Wednesday) default retreat is to Con. You have 48 hours from NOW to get your builds to me (Deadline is roughly 8pm Thursday GMT)

IF I DO NOT RECEIVE BUILD ORDERS YOU WILL NOT BUILD NEW UNITS!
Any questions - mail me.
Thanks for another successful turn - let's keep it up
