DC-272 - TheWhiteWolf   (Jan 15, 2010, 12:27 pm)
Guys,
I'm going to give you all the benefit of the doubt and assume that Yahoo has chosen to block anything with "272" in the subject line. I have ONE set of orders for a deadline a mere 4 1/2 hours away. If this wasn't a playtest, I'd be tempted to NMR the whole lot of you and let the one person who submitted orders have his way with the board (especially since this is not the first time this has happened).
Seriously, guys - if you've lost interest in playing, let me know so I can find someone who will submit orders on time.

Your Disappointed GM,
The White Wolf

Hey guys... sorry for the wait.  I still don't have that last set of orders.  If I don't get them by 11pm CST today, I'm going to open the spot up for a replacement.  If you're the person for whom we're waiting, you've gotten about five emails from me in the last two days.  Get the orders in and you'll still have the spot.  Otherwise, we're moving on.

DC 293: Tower of Babel - AceRimmer   (Jan 15, 2010, 10:16 am)
You think that you're impressing the ladies. "Hey, baby, check out the size of my navy." "Are you enjoying the gun show?" But you're not impressing the ladies. You are provoking the righteous anger of the Almighty, who sees your militarization not unlike the Towers of Babel or Pisa -- and you know what He did to those.

But fine, revel in your moment...

Meanwhile, Spring 1902 will be at 1000 CST on Monday (happy Martin Luther King, Jr. Day -- celebrate by opposing violence and by doing something to combat poverty). And France would like to make sure that all of you know: that deadline's at 10:00 *A.M.*, not 10:00 P.M. He apologizes profusely for the mistake. If I may be sold to venture an idea on his behalf... it would only be sporting if all y'all would commit your own NMRs in S1902 so as to give him a season to catch up!

I have a German/Austrian End Game Proposal. Please provide your votes on the Proposal with your Builds/Disbands this Winter. I will remind you again when I post the results of the Retreats.

Monday is a holiday (MLK) for those of us with jobs that observe banking holidays. So, Joe, Brandon, please provide me your retreats as soon as possible . . . but no later than Tuesday. Thanks.

dc263 ~ Babylon 5 - sgttodd   (Jan 15, 2010, 7:55 am)
As a space game, it IS primarily a fleet game and armies just don't matter so much.

I found this variant in the Variant Bank when I was researching a Star Trek variant. The map was pretty much as you see it, all I did was clean it up slightly, and some unit icons and stuff it all into RealWorld.

I like SciFi, but was never much of a Babylon 5 fan. I think it just didn't come on when I could watch it - heck most of the Star Trek I've ever seen has been reruns.

Watching the game run, I found the map difficult to follow. There didn't seem to be a natural structure or pattern to it - it's more like a jigsaw puzzle where the pieces don't conform to the image and you're trying to reconcile the two. I also found the planet/supply centers too large and easy confuse with units. When looking at a map, or the terrain itself with strategy or tactics in mind, you conduct a Coup d'Oeil or "sweep of the eye" to discern attack routes, defensive lines, and how best to disposition your forces to deal with those of the enemy - I found this map to be difficult in that regard.

Here I have to admit I cheated. Every now and then, to get a better idea of the game's flow, I'd swap in the "white map" so I could see better. (attached)
Those of you that used RealWorld can replace babylon5.bmp with babylon5bw.bmp (make the appropriate copies/backups, etc), load dc263.dpw and TAB/Shift-TAB through the turns to see what I mean.

I guess I'll tone down and unclutter the map somewhat. I'll also reorder the powers in the game so they'll be listed alphabetically - I don't know what I was thinking there.

Anyway - thank you all for playing, I look forward to GMing and playing alongside you in the future.

Jerry

dc278 - Spring 1906 Results - jafainri   (Jan 15, 2010, 5:33 am)
No one like to play Italy and although I was reluctant, I had not played in so long, I made the decision to go for it anyway.

With that said, I had a blast keeping just about everyone on edge saying WTF is he doing? J

There was never an I/A alliance only a mutual understanding as we both had our agendas. I only had the one opportunity to take TRI but knew I could never support that move afterwards. I agree that the childish behavior from turkey played a crucial role in the game as it impacted the rest of us who bordered those countries that took advantage of the Slutan.

I had fun trouncing through Germany and back again. I am however not sure what hell England was doing. The goal here is to WIN. He had France down to 2 units and would have clearly controlled the whole western half of the map. Not even Austria could have built up a force fast enough to counter any offensive or blockade in WMED.

France on the other hand, so dam predicable. Even on my worse day, I out guessed France pretty much every time and might even been on a comeback with my newly formed agreement with Austria. We were just getting started.

This game could have easily gone to a 2 way victory or solo for Austria or England. Just when the game gets interesting, people stop. Never understood that. Since I was the lonely bull with 2 units left, who was I to try and buck the system if people want to quit.

Diplomats,

And so the diplomatic efforts succeed and peace is agreed upon across Europe. England and Austria share the victory, with France and Italy being the two survivors.

End game statements can be sent to the forum for those who wish to do so.

This was my first game GM:ing, and I made some mistakes (some bigger than others). However, I hope you all have had fun playing. I know that I've learned some things, and hope to be a better GM in future games.

I thank you all for participating, and hope to see you soon in another game on Diplomaticcorp.

Final map and Realpolitik file is included.

dc263 ~ Babylon 5 - rodtheworm   (Jan 15, 2010, 4:20 am)
Hi all,

I found the map a bit lacking tactically too, though I found it great fun. Planets need to be a little more aggregated to make armies much use at all, but even then the fact that fleets aew unrestricted makes them a far superior choice. Possibly just doing away with armies and introducing new types of fleet, in the manner of the aeroplane added to the Wings varient: in addition to the normal fleets, perhaps there could be a scout fleet which can move two spaces a turn but cannot itself attack (it could support though), or maybe just attacks at half strength, and/or a dreadnought fleet which counds as the strength of two units but requires two centres to support it? I don't know how hard these would be implement, but it make people think a bit more about whether they want a range of unit types or not, and the dreadnought fleet woud halp to break up stalemate lines a bit.

Just throwing some ideas out there.

Ross

Good day all

It seems I am much more of a traditionalist that I thought. I had major difficulties wrapping my head around this game and its map. Additionally, I have used jDip to adjudicate my games so long that switching to RealWorld seemed like a trip to the dentist. The only real problem, in my less than humble opinion, is the lack of real purpose for armies. I am not sure how the game could be altered to reasonably employ two types of units - maybe an unwritten rule that fleets:armies ratio must be maintained to meet some arbitrary level, but, in retrospect, no one would like being told what to build and it would make builds predictable, though not any less predictable than they were (unnnh, maybe I will build another fleet this season...)

I apologize to everyone for my rather low level of press in this game - normally I am much more on top of things but I ran into a few health issues that took me away from many things that weren't essential.

Thanks to our GM for keeping things running smoothly.

Good luck to all in future games!

Cheers,
Tom

Well, I hate to be the one who adjudicates the first NMR of the 2010

results in the rare occurrence of two zero-build nations in 1901 (due to
the continued pressure on beleaguered Austria).

GM’s remarks:

All orders were in advance of the Deadline, Thanks.

I have a German/Austrian End Game Proposal.  Please provide your votes on the Proposal with your Builds/Disbands this Winter.  I will remind you again when I post the results of the Retreats.

Normally I would automatically do Turkey’s retreat; however, since there are two options for Germany’s retreat I will leave Turkey’s retreat open as well.  Monday is a holiday (MLK) for those of us with jobs that observe banking holidays.  So, Joe, Brandon, please provide me your retreats as soon as possible . . . but no later than Tuesday.  Thanks.

dc263 ~ Babylon 5- Narn - savwa4   (Jan 14, 2010, 8:19 pm)
(yes, it's me again)
I've already mentioned that I like the map.
Tom is right about the impotency of armies.

Here's a loose idea (not necessarily good):
The goal is to incentivise usage of the army.
Consider Army as mobile fortress.
Everything is the same except if ordered to hold it is self supporting.
That is, a HOLDing army has one support inherently.
It would take 3 attacks to dislodge.
That is probably too much power for a unit to have but it would encourage
players to keep armies at the front of their advance.
And, it would also require adjudication by hand... That might be a killer in
itself.

Also:
Thanks to GM Jerry. He did a very good job of keeping us prodded and
dealing with us and keeping things fair.

Also;
Thanks to all, I had some nice conversations and enjoyed it.

dc278 - Spring 1906 Results - FuzzyLogic   (Jan 14, 2010, 7:14 pm)
Hey all,
Fredrik your GMing was some of the best! You may not think so but it
was. Always timely, I was really anticipating results when they were
due out cuz I knew they came out so close to the deadlines.

I really enjoyed the game. From the onset I suspected Dirk was going to
be the player to beat (and he alleges likewise about me) and we talked
early on about a possible 2-way. Then that turned into a 3-way with us
and Germany, and that was my focus for much of the game.

It broke down tho when Dirk started (was there ever a start or was it
just always?) diploming behind our backs, and trying to ensure that
myself and Germany didn't do too well in the alliance. In particular,
Dirk was so worried about an AI (which never was) that I think it drove
him to not work w me at all. (we'll never know if this was legit
paranoia or a convincing ploy)

Really all the early talks of an AI had me somewhat annoyed cuz I knew
there wasn't such (I covered my own centers from Italian attack multiple
times, and failed to support Tony one move in which I could have), and
Dirk was insisting on it so much, that it became a self-fulfilling
prophecy. By making everyone go south, it more or less forced me into
cooperation w Italy, which was never planned. I should have picked up
on this sooner, and Jeff (Germany) had some early suspicions about
England that we didn't act on. Goes to show, you should always follow
your instincts in this game, for a turn later, England invaded Germany
and our alliance was done.

So from then on, I was thinking it was a grim world - for even tho I had
a pretty good empire, I knew Dirk was rallying Russia and France against
me, and my worry was that he would get them to overextend enough my way
that he could stab them and get the solo. That didn't happen... I think
Dirk made a move too soon on Russia, which turned Jeff to my side. I
believe you could have had Russia and France eating out of your hands
for a while longer there Dirk.

Once the stab of Russia happened, he was pretty much out. I was on the
verge of working w Jeff again, to boot England out of StP, but I
chickened out at the last minute, thinking Dirk would be more persuasive
than myself. In hindsight I should have gone w Jeff on this, and Russia
could have held on to Saint Petes and Moscow, and maybe England wouldn't
have had such an easy time.

At a couple points I considered stabbing Italy, but I didn't do that
either, again because of the intense FE pressure about an AI. They were
working so closely together, and France leaving his entire empire open
for England, that I worried they would continue on against me even when
Italy was dead. John, if at any point you'd have made a move to reclaim
Brest, I'd have been more open to working w you, for then you'd have a
northern port. Without that, I figured you were going strictly south
and east, which your units did.

(If we had not drawn here, your build of A Par in this last turn had me
intrigued, for this suggested maybe you were going to take back Bre?)

Dirk, it was truly masterful, that you invaded France, took his most
valuable city, and still managed to convince him you were his best ally
- all while sitting in Bre, ready to invade Paris at will. I don't know
how you did this. Shutting down the French ability to turn on you while
still keeping him onside was a diplomatic feat. You can no longer refer
to yourself as a newbie after that.

I'm happy w the result... If anything I thought the game more likely to
go 3-way if France lodged himself into Tunis, so I took the 2-way
happily as the best result I thought I could get in this one.

Good game, and I hope to see you all again,
-mike

Thanks for GM'ing the game Fredrik I thought you did a good job by any
measure, but an excellent job for a first-timer!

This was a fun game: Jeff Cole, I'm really sorry for the stab, I think
Austria had broken you and I didn't want him to solo with your last
centers, I liked working with you quite a bit and didn't want it to
end; Jeff Clay, you just didn't communicate enough and I wasn't sure
where you stood, especially since I was so afraid of an Austrian-
Italian alliance. Dan, I hardly knew you.

John, you were a great ally up until the final turn when we had a
little static, of course I can't complain too loudly because I had my
moment of weakness in grabbing Brest! Tony, I will take your limited
diplomacy as a product of our never sharing a sphere of influence as
opposed to anything personal. Mike, I expected to see you standing
over us at the end and feel lucky I was able to have a share of it.

Unfortunately I felt this game really came down to the unfortunate NMR
situation with Turkey. If that confusion hadn't happened, or there had
not been the opposition to letting his late orders play, I suspect at
least six if not seven of us would still be playing and anybody could
be leading. Well, no, Mike probably would still be leading but
needless to say it would be a dramatically different game.

I hope to play with all of you again...

Dirk

dc291 fall 1901 results! - coryfucius   (Jan 14, 2010, 5:54 pm)
Alliances and enmities begin to take shape during fall 1901, as more conflicts arise. Germany and Russia bounce in Sweden, leaving it neutral for another year, while all the other neutral supply centers are occupied. Germany and Austria bounce in Tyrolia, leaving it vacant as Italy moves northward to Bohemia. Russia and Turkey once again bounce in the Black Sea. Turkey marches unopposed into Greece and also takes control of Bulgaria. Russia successfully moves to Galicia.

Once again, we have press to share, so hurry down to your telegraph offices. The "wireless" should become available soon to render those dots and dashes obsolete.

Winter 1901 builds will be due tomorrow, Friday 1/15 at 3pm Central (US) / 21:00 GMT. All players will have builds due, as listed after the fall results. The RP file and map are also attached. Thanks!

least six if not seven of us would still be playing and anybody could
be leading. Well, no, Mike probably would still be leading but
needless to say it would be a dramatically different game.

I hope to play with all of you again...

Hey all,
Fredrik your GMing was some of the best!

Good game, and I hope to see you all again,
-mike
