Thank you to Joe for seeing our alliance through until the end, even with the both of us being so close to a solo. I must admit this wasn't my best victory, recognizing that a lot of my success came down to luck. The lack of England was extremely good for me and Russia's decision to move South against Turkey really left me without an enemy for a good portion of the game.
In terms of my mindset throughout the game, there were a few particular highlights that I think are relevant for the end result. When the game started I really didn't have a set direction and I attempted to keep my options open. However, when it became clear that England was not going to be a player this game I knew I needed to make a long term plan. Initially I had been happy to share England with France and Russia, however I knew that would be over quickly and one of us would have to fight it out. So, with Russia busy in the South and being no threat to me I decided it would have to be France (nothing personal). From there I got the upper hand and without any other enemies I managed to slowly leverage myself over him. This also allowed/required me to consider the more strategic elements of the map and the relations of other players. I knew from the start that Joe was someone I could work with, and in my long term planning I was happy to have a shared win with him. However, I also recognized that it was not in my interest to see Russia overrun in the South, so I went out of my way to ensure he was not threatened in the North and I supported him into centres that I really could have taken myself. Although, once France was weakened enough that it was clear he was not going to make a comeback, I had to decide whether to accept a 3 way draw and wait out the remainder of the game, or go after Russia and cement a 2 way victory with Italy. Obviously you know what that decision ultimately was.
Overall this was a very interesting game for me. I had the opportunity to do a lot of long term planning and big picture coordination in areas where I had no direct stakes. Italy and I did a pretty good job I think of timing and coordinating our independent directions which ultimately resulted in our success. Thank you to all the players for a good game, with particular mention of France who continued to submit orders throughout our painful conflict.

Thanks to Eric for sharing the victory.
It was an interesting early dynamic, with no England around. The power vacuum served me quite well, because I didn't have to be too concerned about France or Germany, because they had easier centers to grab, and I felt like it allowed Russia to get involved, but not too involved in the Southeast.
I figured France/Germany would grow but would have to fight each other. I figured Russia could be a major force... but obviously my initial concern was Austria. And when there was a strong suggestion to move to Piedmont, I really felt it inappropriate and a signal that we were going to war very soon. So I hit the streets and seemed to have a sense of interest from Russia and Turkey to either war or at least consider moving on Austria.
(Strange how a missing England doomed Austria.)
I figured with the west of the board disinterested, and the east mildly interested, I could take the big risk in going all out against Austria. I didn't alert Germany to Tyrolia, but quickly followed up with my explanation. The situation cemented a trust between us early on, because I had several opportunities to stab Munich, but just wasn't about to do so unless I felt comfortable in the Balkans. Which really never happened.
Once we hit Austria hard, it was reasonable to divide up the centers. There was a setback or two, but the surrounding of Austria mean a 2-1 advantage on each remaining center, and I suggested everyone be responsible for their attack, and remove the reliance.
There were a few Russian NMRs or lack of orders, and I also began the difficult position of negotiating with Turkey -- which I feared growing stronger and immediately impacting me, and Russia, which I feared he would grow enough in the South and in the North and run the board.
Because there was ongoing trust issues (some of which I gladly assisted) there was a decent stalemate.
Meanwhile, France was getting the worst of it from Germany, and I played nice on both sides until it was obvious what the outcome was going to be. Unfortunately, France hyped up the need for a concerted effort against Germany at a time when I was more trusting of Eric, and less in need of a concerted effort with Turkey.
I wasn't about to sail West and allow Turkish supremacy in the Balkans.
As Russia started to grow North, I hedged my bets. There was talk of G/R/I alliance and a three way. I had reservations about this, since I was concerned more with Russia rolling south than anything else. But Turkey was strong enough to withstand Russia, and yet not willing enough to work out a plan to move North.
I never saw any opportunity to side with Turkey, and at last figured I'd have to break the three-way stalemate, and began working to Greece. I had a few arrangements, and we had a few double-dealing moves in Albania, but I was beginning to see the end of Turkey.
Strangely enough, Russia was doomed to collapse first.
There was a week or so where the three-way alliance (in theory, because in practice it was mostly non-agression) crumbled. I was relatively safe from Germany, and relatively safe from Russia as long as Turkey persisted. But I did try to point out that Russia was overextended and very vulnerable up the middle.
I stirred the pot a bit with Russia, but was wary -- very wary -- of an R/T alliance in the middle of the stalemates, but apparently that never grew anywhere.
Once I was able to snatch Spain, I had the muscle to slowly grind out Turkey. Once Germany stabbed Russia, that allowed me to start maneuvering. For a week or so, I thought I could out-race Eric for the solo, but realized he'd have me at his mercy in Iberia.
We both figured out that we'd have to stab each other to win, and there was still Russia and Turkey to be concerned about. I think two weeks out of the draw, we both decided that we'd stick to a draw course.
Russia's NMR's and then Turkey's merely prolonged the game, and I'm guessing Turkey's intransigence was a way to get back at Andrew ... not sure, but obviously non-votes only prolonged the game until Russia was eliminated.
It was unfortunate about the Draw proposal confusion, and that alone almost destroyed the G/I alliance -- because I at first wasn't sure what Eric was getting on about, and was paranoid that he may decide to go for the 18....
But we quickly resolved the issue.
Great gaming with everyone....

DC301 - TTP - Fall 1905: End of Game - Douglas_E_Fresh (May 25, 2010, 6:49 am) |
The Summer sun twinkled on the surface of the Saone, as the dignitaries made their slow procession over the bridge and in to the city of Macon. In the square in front of the Hôtel de Montrevel, a huge mahogany table had been placed and, flanked by smartly suited attendants, six high backed chairs evenly-spaced around it.
Promising the coming of Fall; a cool breeze whipped at the huge stack of paper work piled on the table, and adjutants struggled to keep all in place as the dignitaries gathered about it.
Tesarik took his seat first and, reaching for a crystal decanter of Pouilly-Fuisse, grabbed it with both hands and took a large swig, before wiping his beard on the sleeve of his overcoat.
Commandant Ciro, of the Mediterranean People's Coalition sat to his right and smiled at those about him as if greeting long-lost family members at a late Summer's picnic.
Taking a seat to Tesarik's left, the Turkish delegate eyed the assembled warily before nibbling at some of the egg and cress sandwiches proffered by an attendant.
Across the table sat the general of the Realm of Frankish Visigoths alongside President Franz Heinrich of Greater Hannover. Looking battle-weary, but dignified, the pair eyed the English Prime Minister; the figurehead of the United Kingdoms of Great Britain and Scandinavia - noting their impatience - took his cue and began his address.
From his position in the front ranks of the Yugoslav honour guard, Agent Fresh watched the dignitaries as they waded through the paving-slab-thick peace agreement. The Head of each state finally took his turn in signing the Macon Accord, and with a splash of ink on paper, the first war in Europe in five hundred years was ended.
Agent Fresh felt the weight of his shouldered rifle and stifled the urge to raise it. The statesmen before him had caused untold terror and bloodshed, not to mention the extermination of the Russian people... surely the deserved to pay for what they had done?
But no. There had been bloodshed enough; and martyrdom to some fictionial cause was not really a facet of Fresh's personality. Besides, the Peace attained, must now be maintained, and in his deep-cover as an officer in the Yugoslav national Army, Agent Fresh was poised to carry out the work of the League of Shadows and to see to it that: Never again would the ugly shadow of war fall across the face of the continent they all must now share.

Hi Doug,
Thanks for being an excellent GM, consistently timely with a lot of
flavour text and fun little add-ons.
This was easily my least rewarding and fulfilling game of Dip played
so far. For that, I certainly blame myself. This was my first time
playing a variant like this where you had great control over your
starting units. I made what I imagine to be a classic mistake, of
trying to do something different and creative at the expense of having
a good strategic plan. So it was that I clumsily set up my starting
centers with a strongly north-northwest deployment without have a good
diplomatic plan for either crushing England or working in concert with
him. This ambiguity of purpose quickly led me to a marginalized board
position. If I hadn't become buddies with Michael (France) I certainly
would have been eliminated.
I was very much looking forward to this variant, so when my own lack
of strategic planning made the game go quickly sideways, it was indeed
a disappointment. In retrospect the only thing I really enjoyed in
this game as it played out was my friendship with Michael and talking
about moves. But even there, I had kind of "checked out" early in the
game and my contributions to our tactical planning were often littered
with mistakes and oversights. Sorry for not bringing my "A" game,
Michael.
"Taking the Peace" was not my finest hour of dip. I do like the
variant and think Doug is a quality GM, so will be looking to play
this and with Doug again in the future.
I tried posting this at Redscape but it said only users with "Special
Access" can post in that forum. Which apparently means not me!
Feel free to reprint this over there...

ha ha...well, from my side....MOST of it was in good fun
seriously your "own lack of strategic planning" drove me absolutely insane this game....when someones diplomacy is sending you one message but their moves on the board something TOTALLY OPPOSITE, it doesnt leave you many options!!!
But no worries, at least we somehow managed to salvage a draw out of it. Despite all the bad blood Id still look forward to another game with both you and Michael. It was never personal for me.
Congrats to Austria though....clearly head and shoulders deserved the board top this game.
Cheers Doug, nice variant, I'd certainly play it again.

DC301 - TTP - Fall 1905: End of Game (dc301) Kendercommander May 25, 05:42 pm |
Good Evening!
Ordinarily I'm quite an advocate for EOGs, but my memory is honestly quite flagging. So, yes I'll do an EOG, but it will be rather short and lacking a thorough chronological journal.
Thank you Douglas for hosting this variant -- I am a little sad that my "custom" empire happened to be Austria-shuffle-south, but it was still entertaining and being able to call myself "Yugoslavia", for all the good it pragmatically did, served to keep my attention quite well. I one day hope to run a game as smooth[ly] as yours.
I was flattered with how many players wanted to work with me, and genuinely seemed to follow through on the goal -- the exception naturally being post-Turkey Russia, but I DID open into Rumania, and things went pretty south after that... Honestly, I was planning on wiping Turkey out as soon as possible with Russian help -- his opening to Greece was, while quite a natural opening, rather threatening to my Balkan Empire. Russia, forgive my betrayal -- you held out til' the end, and forgive any unnecessary treachery on my part -- for me, half the fun is the con, not the end.
Now, I have been a small nation before a large one in past games and I understand, though many players say it "poor showmanship" or whatever, that the first and most satisfying reaction is to act however you damn well please, survival or not, just to prove that you DO have an effect on the game. To me, this is a fundamental concept necessary for "soft" conquering -- as long as a player feels that they have choices and input, and most importantly that you've GIVEN them this, they will likely follow you to the grave or until you REVOKE such freedom. Unfortunately for me, it was this second point that I did not tread upon quite hard enough and towards the end my Turkish "vassal" became a liability that I honestly could do nothing about.
I trusted him explicitly [barring that one scare], so it never came of much, although I do believe some of my later orders would've given him cause for concern -- perhaps rightly so, I can't honestly recall what my strategy was there. For what it's worth, thanks for sticking by me even though I could've been an easy stab at several points.
Italy, though I had initially quite determined that I would eliminate you with French assistance, a curious movement by Russia made my natural paranoia look for allies -- I kept telling France "one more season!", waving those perfect chances to bounce you for home centres, and eventually we fell into a perfect demilitarized peace -- I daresay we never had any misunderstanding [except maybe my arrogantly declared ship, I don't know]. Towards the end France and Germany had convinced me that an alliance with them was useful, and sadly that meant to had to go -- luckily, I never had to realize your end. Thanks for sticking with me for better or worse, and in essence serving as my navy.
France, I honestly began with the idea of an AF alliance taking the board. I found myself the weakest player at the start, and kept equivocating because I didn't want unnecessary risks -- and I'm sure you gave up on my wishy-washy self after a while. All the same, I quite enjoyed our communications -- I recall in our earlier exchanges I took liberties and expressed my ideas in prose too flowery for what was to be exterminating our neighbour. Fun, all the same -- thanks.
Germany, it was [ironically] your equivocation as you said that led to your stunted growth. I asked for assistance and you would always just sit it out, and eventually I determined [while being very wishy-washy myself] that I'd run my way through the alps.
England, we didn't interact much until the end, although we were entirely misaligned for my hypothetical solo, so I was a little loathe to trust you -- all the same, you helped me break the stalemate and, in theory, we could have ground our way through Franco-Germany. But, by that time the game had lost it's flare, and I thought I'd give stabbing you a half-hearted go. Sorry, for what it's worth.
I am first an foremost a player for the melodramatic -- I'm sure more than half of you realize that. Second, I play for the fun of conning, alliances, and, in general, communications: This ties in with the first. Thirdly, I play to win. And in this game, though I thought for a moment I was well on my way to a solo, I had lost the interesting exchanges, and my lazy attempts at stabbing didn't garner anything new. In my books, I had "won" my conditions when I had literally every [surviving] player on the board suggesting an alliance with me, the largest nation. Granted, a few of these offers were only to break a stalemate, but all the same I had a roaring good time for quite a while there. Thank you everyone for an entertaining game!
Any questions or comments, and I'll try my best to answer.
Hope to see you all on the battlefield again some time!-K.T.Yugoslavia

ha ha...well, from my side....MOST of it was in good fun
seriously your "own lack of strategic planning" drove me absolutely insane this game....when someones diplomacy is sending you one message but their moves on the board something TOTALLY OPPOSITE, it doesnt leave you many options!!!

To all, I usually don't make closing comments but I'm
compelled to in this one (after reading this you may see why I don't make
closing comments).
To Doug, you have my compliments on a good job. I thought
you ran a good game. Pro's were your commentary and the fix times for turns,.Cons,
that map just is impossible to read (and I'm not the only one, poor Italy went at
least 2 years without a build he was entitled to). I'm not sure I'd play the variant
again and I certainly would never be Russia in it. He gives up his 4 SC
advantage.
To Austria,
you played a good game but you were aided by the ineptitude of your closest
players. I'd relish a rematch someday. Your prose in the beginning was quite
captivating but you waffled too long. If it hadn't been for your vassal Italy I'd have taken you and I really thought that
we would end with a Austria France draw ( with Germany and one of your vassals)..
To Italy
and Turkey,
I'd love to hear how your game plan was going to give you a win? What exactly
was the point of being Austria's
pawns forever? Any good strategy says that the minor player has to turn on
their protector sometime! I am really curious; did Austria have dirty pictures of you
to blackmail you?
England
my biggest mistake was not trusting Germany
early in the game and invading England
proper via the German offered convoy. If I had done that we could have eliminated you
at least on the western part of the board and I probably would have won or the
draw would not have been so inclusive, because the only way that Germany's
and my stalemate line was broken was because we didn't eliminate you.. However
once we allied, for the record, Dirk and I were very agreeable to have our
three countries in a draw against Austria. However when you turned
unreliable while I didn't get quite as upset as Dirk over our exchanges, I will
remember that you are an unreliable ally, not the type I care to play with
again unless it's hostilities from the start and trust me it will be.
German you played a good game, especially considering your opening
moves that left you no SC's within a defensive buffer. Its tough being Germany (and Austria); the edge countries are
easier, but still you did a great job and were a terrific ally. I never thought
to stab you even with the proffered opportunities by other players. I hope we
stay in touch in the "real world" and play again. BTW at some point I'd like to
send my daughter's resume to you for comment and if you ever expand to nyc, let
me know.
In conclusion, you know this game is a lot like woman (at
least until I got married). You are in a relationship and its fun at first and
then it becomes a drag and then you look for a way out. You swear off them for
a while and then memories fade and you get drawn back in. I'm out of here for a
while, but I'm sure I'll be back sometime after the memories fade.

I'd like to echo what everyone has said about the flavor text and role playing that Doug wrote, it was very enjoyable. I'm only sorry I didn't have more time to add little details about my nation. The map was a little dodgy, and it was easy to confuse mine and france's units.
I started out by making peace with everyone, which, was nice as far as things go, but it meant that off the bat I had to break the peace with someone. I wasn't sure who to work with, but France's rapid growth put my on edge, especially given his access to the Mediterranean. Although he wasn't too threatening, i figured it was only a matter of time before he wiped out Germany, and then came for me. I planned on nabbing Marsailles and maybe spain for builds, and then making nice so I could turn east and secure the Mediterranean for myself. After that though, things got messy. Since I was going after France I needed Austrian backing, and he seemed supportive, and even got me Greece. As things dragged on though, I wasn't getting anywhere with France, and I figured it was only a matter of time before Austria stabbed me. Unfortunately, I had so concentrated my forces on France that it would have taken me many turns to redeploy.
France sinking two of my ships it would have been the perfect time to redeploy, but alas, it was not to be, and a combination of some miscommunication, and a lot of stupidity on my part led me to miss this chance. After that I felt pretty isolated, given that I was vulnerable to an Austrian stab, and fighting France, my only two neighbors. England reached out, but I wasn't very optimistic about my future, and thus, about working together.
All in all, I very much enjoyed the variant, and liked making my own little empire, even if it was fairly similar to the standard Italy. Thanks you all for the enjoyable game, and I hope to have the pleasure of playing with you again sometime.

I'm married. It's not normally an issue. Except when she's like "let's take the kids to (fill in the blank)," and I say "I can't! If I don't write this email RIGHT NOW, then the centaurs and fairies will take over the nomads, and I need the nomads to survive so they don't take me down next!" Actually, it's not that bad. I know Andy (white wolf) and his wife both play. Mine thinks it's boring (blasphemy, i know!).

Yeah, my wife played for a while. We only argued when we were in the same game and I turned into a raging jerk over negotiations. Or when it's my turn to do (insert chore here) and I have to write that email NOW. That last one seems to be a trend.

The game started out with a lot of diplomacy flying around, but the

alliance seemed perfect way to start, nice and safe. Adam turned out
to be a great communicator and strategizer.
Sam (Greece) and I talked a (very) little bit, and by Spring 299, it
was clear that I'd be pushing full steam ahead against him. Gerald
(Carthage) was working up in Iberia and Adam and I careful crafted a
plan to split the Med.
Throughout the game, different partners were proposed to add to the EP
alliance, starting with Carthage, possibly Greece, ending with Rome.
But besides Carthage at the start, I felt EP had the game pretty well
in-hand. Maybe the game would end with a 2-way draw, or maybe we'd
fight it out once all others were gone.
At times, Adam and I backed ourselves into near-breakdown, but mostly
it was due to a misinterpretation of one or the other's thoughts.
Those usually lasted for one season at most, more often than not, we
worked it out by being slightly less aggressive. But we also were
both careful to keep enough units near our homes as detente against
major stabs!
In the end, when the EP Draw was proposed, we had the choice of end it
here, or drag the game on to a possibly "High Noon" shootout. Too
many variables, and truthfully not enough free time, made my decision
easy: take the points and run.
Great quick game all! Lots of fun!

dc318 - Winter Blitz 2010 Italy EOG - chaosonejoe (May 24, 2010, 4:32 pm) |
Great gaming with everyone....

dc318 - Winter Blitz 2010 Italy EOG (Winter Blitz) ericjmarr May 25, 08:12 am |

Hallo zusammen,
Spanish Republic, rest in peace! After three years of struggle, the
republic has succumbed to a united front of Latin fascists.
To mark this seminal event, I picked a child's drawing from the "They Still
Draw Pictures" collection. Perhaps you'll find it as interesting as I do: http://orpheus.ucsd.edu/speccoll/tsdp/frame.html
Of course, the unravelling of the socialist camp does not stop there. The
USSR, after a promising start, is equally history. Lenin must be turning in
his grave - and, in his Mexican exile, Trotsky probably feels vindicated in
his belief that "Socialism in One Country" was an unworkable approach... So
we have our first player elimination. Nigs, please do not forget to submit an
EOG for later publication.
Now, the socialists' camp has also taken another hit, if we count France as
being socialist on account of her Popular Front government. The French colonial
troops in Tripoli simply couldn't withstand the uninhibited shelling of their
positions by Anglo-Egyptian forces. Similarly, France's position in the Levant
has been overrun, spelling at least for now the end to the French overseas
empire. Yet at least in Metropolitan France the news is somewhat more positive
as the Armée de Terre managed to halt the German advance on the capital, while
Brest remained in French hands thanks to an Anglo-Spanish standoff there.
Matters in the Balkans have also been on the move. Hitherto proudly
independent Hungary and Croatia have finally bowed to outside pressure, the
Germans gaining the upper hand in the former, while the Turks conquered the
latter. Though Turkish Balkan conquests did not stop there as Atatürk managed to
oust the Poles from Rumania and seize those Ploesti oil fields...
Farther north, it's equally been a bad season for the lesser powers.
Belgium moved into Britain's sphere of influence, whereas German ambitions in
Sweden have finally been crowned with success. So, in total, the number of as
yet truly independent lesser powers has been halved in a matter of months.
The Winter 1938 Retreats/Adjustments are due NLT 6PM CET
on Wednesday, 26 May.
Frohe Pfingsten/Happy Pentecost!

All,
As a point of clarification - I received NO NEW EGP's with Spring orders. Thus we have no EGP proposals on the table for Fall.
I take EGP's with Spring and Fall orders. Thus any proposal that came after Spring results will be included in the Fall results and can be voted on with Spring 20 orders.
Clear? Consider this your reminder for Fall 19 due tomorrow (about 31ish hours).
