Hallo zusammen,

Spanish Republic, rest in peace! After three years of struggle, the
republic has succumbed to a united front of Latin fascists.

To mark this seminal event, I picked a child's drawing from the "They Still
Draw Pictures" collection. Perhaps you'll find it as interesting as I do: http://orpheus.ucsd.edu/speccoll/tsdp/frame.html

Of course, the unravelling of the socialist camp does not stop there. The
USSR, after a promising start, is equally history. Lenin must be turning in
his grave - and, in his Mexican exile, Trotsky probably feels vindicated in
his belief that "Socialism in One Country" was an unworkable approach... So
we have our first player elimination. Nigs, please do not forget to submit an
EOG for later publication.

Now, the socialists' camp has also taken another hit, if we count France as
being socialist on account of her Popular Front government. The French colonial
troops in Tripoli simply couldn't withstand the uninhibited shelling of their
positions by Anglo-Egyptian forces. Similarly, France's position in the Levant
has been overrun, spelling at least for now the end to the French overseas
empire. Yet at least in Metropolitan France the news is somewhat more positive
as the Armée de Terre managed to halt the German advance on the capital, while
Brest remained in French hands thanks to an Anglo-Spanish standoff there.

Matters in the Balkans have also been on the move. Hitherto proudly
independent Hungary and Croatia have finally bowed to outside pressure, the
Germans gaining the upper hand in the former, while the Turks conquered the
latter. Though Turkish Balkan conquests did not stop there as Atatürk managed to
oust the Poles from Rumania and seize those Ploesti oil fields...

Farther north, it's equally been a bad season for the lesser powers.
Belgium moved into Britain's sphere of influence, whereas German ambitions in
Sweden have finally been crowned with success. So, in total, the number of as
yet truly independent lesser powers has been halved in a matter of months.

The Winter 1938 Retreats/Adjustments are due NLT 6PM CET
on Wednesday, 26 May.

Frohe Pfingsten/Happy Pentecost!

Charles

POEM OF THE DAY:
Mass
At the end of the battle the fighter lay dead. A man came to
him
and said: 'Don't die! I love you too much!'
But the corpse, alas, went
on dying.

Two came to him and again said:
'Don't leave us! Take heart!

Come back to life!'
But the corpse, alas, went on dying.

Then
twenty, a hundred, a thousand,
Five hundred thousand, came, crying:
'So
much love and yet so powerless against death!'
But the corpse, alas, went on
dying.

Millions surrounded him,
pleading together:
'Brother, don't
leave us!'
But the corpse, alas, went on dying.

Then, all the men on
earth
stood round him. The corpse eyed them sadly,
overwhelmed. He got up
slowly,
embraced the first man, started to walk.
