variants vs. standard - charlesf (May 20, 2010, 6:27 pm) |
Just a curious question for some of those that have played a bunch of different games - do you find that you perform better or worse at one or the other?
My Diplomacy experience is rather limited, but no, I don't think my gaming performance has much at all to do with the variant at hand. The same basic skills are required in any Diplomacy variant.
I carefully study whatever scenario is thrown at me. Gaining a deeper understanding of the game's topography etc. is what's among the most fun aspects of playing Diplomacy. It's incidentally also the key to designing decent Diplomacy Variants, which I enjoy doing arguably at least as much as actually playing.
That being said, I have played only a very limited number of Standard Diplomacy games in my life. I'm a variant guy. Though I haven't played all that many variant games either - a function of playing at most two games at a time and not having been engaged in the hobby for a good number of years.
Anyway, for me, Standard is a bit of an irrelevance. The 1900 variant is imo the better "Standard". No other nation other than Germany remotely interests me in Standard, whereas I find all of 1900's powers sufficiently interesting.[Reply] |

The new forum look - charlesf (May 20, 2010, 5:58 pm) |
Apparently the site has received this overhaul a whole month ago. I've only noticed this now.
I must confess that the new forum isn't working for me. I find the way individual messages are presented highly confusing and it makes it difficult to follow any conversation - unless I'm missing something.
Also, I find light-on-dark text less easy on the eye than the previous font and colour scheme.
I wish I could give more positive feedback as I am grateful what work you guys put into this site. But I'm afraid I'm feeling nostalgic about the previous message board, despite having been a DC member for less than a year.
To some things up, I'd like to see:
- a black-on-light-colour layout
- threads by default including all replies[Reply] |
The new forum look (Help & Suggestions) FuzzyLogic May 26, 09:17 pm |
Hi Charles,
I have to wonder if it's harder to read w the serif font we have now vs the (boring?) verdana we had before. Verdana seems to be the most popular for easy-on-the-eyes reading.
Threads by default, including all replies...
Currently you can go into the Category Tree, pick a topic, and then it'll show you all the (first 20?) recent messages in that topic. You can switch the view then from Compact to Brief to Full, to show the entire messages.
You want to what, be able to read one whole thread that way?
Is a thread, then, "this message" and "replies to it" and "replies to those" or is it also including walking up the tree, perhaps to the original post?
Open to any other suggestions... |
The new forum look (Help & Suggestions) dknemeyer May 27, 09:09 am |
The main issue absolutely is the contrast. Peach on grey just ain't easy to read. |
The new forum look (Help & Suggestions) FuzzyLogic May 27, 08:58 pm |
Since we have the picture frame look what would ppl think if we went to a canvas-colored background, and black text? A lighter canvas than we have on the left side, in the currently dark frame?
Or is it as simple as a whiter font color? The peach is hard to read on the gray, agreed. It's easier to read on the charcoal. |
The new forum look (Help & Suggestions) dknemeyer May 27, 09:37 pm |
It would take some testing. The key is lots of contrast; the optimal is near-white on near-black or vice-versa for readability, but you don't need to be that pure. Given the aesthetic that you've established here I might suggest making the grey darker, maybe quite a bit darker, and get the font as close to white without breaking your overall colour palette as possible. That should do it. The only thing to be aware of then is whether or not those changes clash with other font/backgrounds elsewhere on the site so it no longer seems coherent. |
The new forum look (Help & Suggestions) sunchung May 27, 06:54 pm |
The issue I've been having with the threads is that it's embedded versus "flat". On one hand, you can see who is responding to whom, but it forces you to click through each message in order to see the entire conversation. I prefer the vBullentin style where it's a flat organization and you can see what everyone else has written.
For instance, when I click on "Community" and then "Category Tree", and then under "General" select a topic, I get a long list of new messages that all relate to the same topic. Instead, I would prefer to see all of the topics themselves. If there's a fast moving topic, then that would dominate the view. Right now, "variants vs standard" takes up 1/2 of the first page. It makes the other topics hidden. |
The new forum look (Help & Suggestions) FuzzyLogic May 27, 08:53 pm |
Ok, so that is something we can change... I clicked thru how you said, and yes, "Variants vs Standard" fills approx 40% of the messages on the 1st page of the Community forum. So what would you rather see here, "Variants vs Standard" have one line? One line with an indicator of how many replies it had? Sort it by date of last post in the topic, I presume, right?
This comes down to taste. Some forums, I've seen it where popular posts will indeed fill your general view. On others, you just have one line per thread.
Try this...
Go into like you described, then click on "Variants vs Standard" (any one of them). Read the message if you like. Then scroll down. Toward the bottom, you see two columns...
1st column is an indented tree of the current thread, showing who all replied to who.
2nd column has all threads in the Community Forum. I presume a list like this column is how you'd prefer to see the initial list? This gives you a grand overview of every thread that has been posted in Community, but very little feel for "what's being talked about, today".
That's what the other view was designed to show you. Today, these issues are hot... sort of thing.
Thoughts?

The new forum look (Help & Suggestions) FuzzyLogic May 27, 09:02 pm |
Notice this, too...
With the concept of only the most recent post in a thread being shown, it is too easy to never see the older ones, unless you show them all.
E.g. I just posted 3 messages in this thread. But when I go to the home page now, my posts about the colors and the arrangement will never get seen, unless someone happens to deliberately go into that thread and read it intentionally.
By listing all the messages, yeah, this thread does appear to dominate Help & Suggestions today, but isn't that appropriate if it's really that active? If ppl want to see older inactive threads, you can scroll down and see them in the "Threads in this Topic" section.
Just brainstorming... |
The new forum look (Help & Suggestions) dknemeyer May 27, 09:43 pm |
I think post volume matters. Traditionally DC has a very LOW post volume outside of the games themselves. Thus, if you only show the most recent single post of n topics you are going to have a small group of recent things and then a bunch of stale ones. If we assume the forums will remain lightly used into the foreseeable future, what we have now seems right.
On the other hand, in an active forum with lots of posts and diversity, it is far better to simply show the last post on each topic as Sun is mentioning.
Beyond that it is just personal preference. I'm not sure what mine is I suppose it changes on context. It sounds like Sun's is the single post/many topics. Both ways are valid in some absolute sense. |
The new forum look (Help & Suggestions) sunchung May 27, 11:23 pm |
I think having the summary of the message also confuses things a bit. You only get a glimpse of the topic, and sometimes things can meander in a thread. My 2 cents (and by the way, I really appreciate the thoughts and efforts in improving the site) is if there's an infrequent visitor to the site, then they don't quite know what people are responding to.
If you want to include the summary of the topic, and have it display on the landing page, then why not the first post of that thread? And then if you showed what the number of responses are to that topic, then you can see which are the "hot topics" currently on the site.
Lastly, I think the other thing is I think the font may be too small...
Notice this, too...

I think a single line per topic, how many postings, and the date of the last post makes sense.
In terms of threaded versus flat (I think that's the term) I realize it's a personal preference. It's just that it's sometimes hard to follow the conversation if it splits out. Where as a flat structure makes sure that the conversation is a single one... There's a website that I've seen that actually has both options. If you go to www.dpreview.com and go to the "forum section" and then click on one of the topics, there's a toggle button at the top that allows you to switch the view.

ACD236/DC288: Balkans1860 Winter 1866 Adjustments:... - Kenshi777 (May 20, 2010, 4:00 pm) |
Cetinje is the historical capital of the independent kingdom of
Montenegro, a close ally of the Serbian people throughout much of its
history, particularly in the wars against the Ottoman Empire. Its
mountain strongholds were the last bastion of Orthodox Christianity in
the Balkans that remained unconquered by the invading Muslims of
Turkey. As the Ottoman empire receded and the rising states of
Bulgaria, Greece, and Serbia reclaimed their homelands, Montenegro
remained fiercely independent throughout, only finally joining Serbia
by choice in 1918 at the conclusion of World War I.
Here in the Balkan Wars, Cetinje is now home to the 3rd largest navy
(tied with Bulgaria) on the map. Romania, not to be outdone, adds a
fleet of their own in Constanta, and the Austrians remove their
remaining fleet in the Gulf of Venezia. Three powers now remain in a
single SC on the map, clinging fiercely to life.

FLWC f05 (The sounds of...) - FuzzyLogic (May 20, 2010, 3:38 pm) |
Know that sound a train makes when it slams into a brick wall and every car crunches up against all the cars in front of it, leaving a big mess of smushed up cars on the tracks? Well that's the sound we hear in our northern waters as a multinational line of fleets hits a lurch in the Faerie Kingdom of Ella.
And you know that sound that Homer Simpson makes? Well that's the sound we hear from the Undead as some confusion around the central island leads to a small Elven stronghold. "Doh!"
And did you hear the one about the Barbarian, the Dwarf and the Hobbit who walked into a Dip game and all got eliminated?
What. Were you expecting something more? That's it. You're out!
Sorry Joey, Ross and Brian! We're down to 13 players remaining... Hope you enjoyed the not-so-fruitful 5 years...

As I've already received orders from two of the four remaining active powers, I thought I'd suggest that if I receive four sets of orders confirmed as final before the suggested deadline, I'll adjudicate. The two players I've received orders from (naming no names, Simon and Sean!!) would need to confirm that their orders are final...

As I've already received orders from
two of the four remaining active powers, I thought I'd
suggest that if I receive four sets of orders confirmed as
final before the suggested deadline, I'll adjudicate.
The two players I've received orders from (naming no names,
Simon and Sean!!) would need to confirm that their orders
are final...

Spring 1907...and Italy looks to be
on the way out, as he loses two centres to advancing
Turkish
forces, whilst Tunis will surely fall in the Fall.
Elsewhere, Russian attempts to tactically withdraw
from
Denmark are thwarted by a french advance east.
Europe
looks to be descending into a three way battle...
Russia only had one retreat of his Danish army - to
Sweden,
which I've made. Sean, if you want ot disband that

ACD236/DC288: Balkans1860 Winter 1866 Deadline Rem... - Kenshi777 (May 20, 2010, 3:22 pm) |
Yowza - sorry about the late reminder - Winter adjustments are due in

them...!

On 5/17/10, Benjamin Hester wrote:
You know, it just dawned on me that I called the last adjudication
Fall 1866, when in fact it was Spring 1866. My apologies for that
screw up. So now that the space-time continuum has re-established
itself, and we find ourselves in the *real* Fall of 1866, some very
interesting events are unfolding...but first, our usual historical
context...
Trieste was born Tergeste, an Illyrian settlement captured by the
Romans in 177 BC. Tergeste remained Roman, and then Byzantine, until
the Lombards sacked the city in 567 AD. Later in 1382, Trieste
appealed to the Habsburg crown for protection against the strength of
Venice, and was integrated into Austria-Hungary.
Historically, Italy then received Trieste as spoils of World War I
from the collapsing Austrian state, but in our Balkan Wars, we find
Serbs as the occupiers. Italy denies Austria the support needed to
hold the line in Trieste against the Romanian and Serbian invaders.
Elsewhere, the Greeks do a marvelous job of repelling Serb, Bulgarian,
and Romanian invaders on all fronts, save Anatolia, as the Bulgarians
begin to draw the net around the last Ottoman outpost in Izmir. A
fierce naval battle in the Gulf of Izmir results in a draw. Romanian
armies weave their way cautiously through Serb and Bulgarian lands,
making their way to the front.
The Bulgaria/Greece/Rumania draw is voted down vigorously.

Gentlemen,The winter builds are in, and we see a whole bunch of new Fleets in the Mediterranean, while other Fleets are removed by default.
Russia and Turkey are now officially placed in Civil Disorder, failing to submit orders for two consecutive major turns. I will not seek out any replacements. Countries in civil disorder will automatically hold, and units displaced will automatically disband. Revise your strategies accordingly.
We have a player who is going to be out of touch for a few days, so the next deadline is going to be in about a week:

Adam: 2009 DCI Champion! - m_don_j (May 20, 2010, 10:09 am) |
Congrats to Adam, from nowhere it would seem!
My game was bleak from start to finish really. I think that Dan made the whole region unstable over a period of time, to the point where my only desire was to see him wiped from the dace of the earth before I was. I got half of that, so I'm kind of satisfied. Adam really showed that patience pays off, and sticking to the game where others may have faltered. An important lesson for everyone to review once in a while.

Yes, Congrats Adam. Well done.
Patience is a virtue it would seem, but 1906... what a year. And I would argue that starting near me really paid off for Adam.
I think I shared my EOG statement a while back (though many of you have probably printed it and reread it 2-3 times a week) so I'll only lobby again for my inclusion in the 2010 DCI which should be starting up in a couple weeks, no?. Best game of the DC year. And thanks again Mike for GMing.
Good Game All,

Congrats Adam!
2009 DCI Champion!
By unanimous vote after 16 1/2 years of game-time, all powers agree to a DIAS. By virtue of having the most supply centers under his control on this day of peace, Adam is crowned the DCI Champ!
With this incredible victory comes guaranteed entry into next year's DCI (and swift elimination there from).
I know things got kinda heated in this one, but that's what Dip is all about... ppl do get involved in these games on a pretty deep level. This game is by all means a stellar example of why you should stick it out and be patient, for Turkey sat on 3 centers for the first 10 years of the game, always boxed into the corner. Then of course we see his incredible rise to fame over the next 6 years, while France and Norway fall in tandem. A lot of players got evicted early on, before most of the drama occurred, tho maybe there was plenty of drama that I just wan't privy to.

DC 298 Fall 1919 Adjucation - untitled36 (May 20, 2010, 8:39 am) |
Hey all,
I got a few move revisions this turn, so hopefully the orders below are the most up-to-date, but double check them to make sure!
Italy must really be wishing for the ability to transform fleets into armies. The russians kick Italy out of Moscow, but France manages to claim edinburgh. England (suprise!) NMR's again.
Two retreats needed. Italian A Mos can retreat to Lvn or OTB. Russian F Edi can retreat to Cly or Nth, or otb.
Build-wise, France gains one for his successful assault on Edi, Italy gains one because of that A Gal that was disbanded in spring, and Russia loses one.
And this game is going into 1920!

DC 298 Fall 1919 Adjucation (Winter Blitz) untitled36 May 24, 09:23 am |
Hey all,
We see more action this turn than we have for a while. Italy rearranges his forces, and Russia finally traps that last pesky italian unit behind his lines. Russia also gains Edinburgh, but france's fleets all make it to the front lines...
It'll be very interesting to see what happens next!
The one retreat is French F Edi, who can go to yor, or otb. I took the liberty of auto-retreating to Yor. Let me know if you prefer OTB.
IMPORTANT NEWS: I will be traveling across the country to visit family this weekend, and thursday is out big day of driving. So I will probably ask for a pinch-hitter to GM the game thursday (maybe friday as well). So PLEASE make sure you send things to the order box in addition to me.

Adam: 2009 DCI Champion! - ddz999cat23 (May 20, 2010, 7:36 am) |
Good Game All,
Dan

Nice, well played all.
You all deserve the DIAS for sticking it out.
In particular Id like to congratulate Nigs on his tenacity and patience.
For my small part I really enjoyed it and hope to be in it again one day
take care all

Congrats Adam, you made it, DCI Champ!
To everyone else, (including you Jorge!) thanks for a great game.
I made mistakes on and off the board, and was responsible for a good bit of the heat Mike was talking about, but it was always meant to be in the spirit of the game.
To those I stabbed, Frank, Matt, Max, and Mikael, Jorge, Dan,nothing personal; to those I offended,Nigel, Adam, Mike, and in particular Jorge my apologies once more. Dan, I'm only glad I didn't start the game anywhere near you!
But, of all, my thanks and gratitude to Mike who stayed cool under much provocation from me and kept the show on the road. Truly great GM'ing!
Hope to get to an EOG in a while,
Joe

DC289: Spring 1908 - Rocketship (May 19, 2010, 11:08 pm) |
Hi Folks,
I've received an end-of-game proposal for a solo victory for Turkey, survival for the other three remaining powers. Ordinarily I'd wait until the next adjudication to announce the proposal, but the request came in so soon that I figured it wouldn't hurt to put it in now.
So, please submit your vote with your orders. This proposal must receive unanimous support in order to pass. A missing vote will count as a "no."
Cheers,
Matthew
