Giuseppe Garibaldi, known as the "Hero of the Two Worlds" for his
campaigns in S. America and Europe, is perhaps the most notable figure
of 1860. In the name of Victor Emmanuel II (who would be king of
Italy, in no small part due to Garibaldi's efforts) General Garibaldi
forged a national army of Italy from irregular forces and united the
fragmented petty kingdoms, even wresting some of them away from France
and Austria in the process.
Yet one has to wonder how Garibaldi would have fared under the
difficult circumstances Adam has had to face in our game, invaded on
three fronts by Austrians, Serbs, and Greeks. Still, the alliance
structure of this game has shifted recently, and perhaps new hope will
arise for Italian unification as new allies become available. Spring
will tell...
And speaking of Spring, our next deadline will be THURSDAY, March 11,
2010, 1700 EST. I will do my level best to publish results as soon as
possible after this deadline - please remember to turn in prelims as
soon as possible after this announcement. They can always be changed
later! Please keep CCing me on the player negotiations also!
