Hallo zusammen,

if you thought the manoeuvres earlier this year
promised a revival of Republican fortunes, think again. The Nationalists were
able to march into the Spanish capital unopposed as the Republicans had left to
cover their Valencia base - without their own provisional capital falling into
foreign hands as the Western powers inconclusively fought over those spoils. But
Franco's exploits do not stop there as his Catalan Army made a timely move on
Marseille, thus dooming France's Southern army.

As for the lesser powers, only Iraq and the
southern provinces of Yugoslavia succumbed to foreign pressure this season,
whereas Hungary and Sweden were able to defy their greater neighbours. This
means that the minor power casualty list for 1937 features 5 victims. As
opposed to 8 in 1936 (not counting Madrid). Checking out the previous 1926
playtest, there were 13 fewer minor powers after the first year and another
three bit the bullet in the second year. So we're looking at a somewhat
slower decrease in minor powers.

I am glad that the Times of London remain filled with letters to the
editor. Smile

The Winter 1937 Retreats/Adjustments are due NLT 6PM CET
on Wednesday, 12 May.

Letter to the Times

Dear Times, I cannot fathom how could this influential newspaper publish
such blatant Soviet propaganda. I speak of the article in the last installment
of this paper by a certain Col J.T Hartley. The statements made in this article
are either blatant lies or merely perplexing without the right background. So
let me explain the current situation. The British Empire declined the proposed
treaty and decided to stay in full force. Under Article 9 of the Constantinople
Convention of the Suez Canal the Egyptian Government decided to intervene. They
asked for help and the Turkish fleet agreed in the good faith. The Suez was
liberated, but sadly Port Said was badly damaged in the ensuring conflict. All
the financial control of Suez Canal lies now in the hands of the Suez Canal
Authority. The increased commission will go to the repairs of the destructed
parts in Port Said. There are also plans to use the increased money flow to
widen the Canal up to 60 meters. The Suez Canal itself is now protected by a
token force of the Turkish soldiers, as agreed by the Turko-Egyptian Treaty of
1937. The Constantinople Convention of the Suez Canal as signed by all present
parties is still in force. The Canal is open to any vessel and will stay open
even in this troubled times.
Yours truly, Mehmet Vehib Kaçı.

QUOTE OF THE DAY: "The Allied high command's dominating thought was to make
sure of success, a thought that led it to use orthodox methods and material. As
a result it was almost always possible for me, despite inadequate means of
reconnaissance and scanty reports, to foresee the next strategic or tactical
move of my opponent." -Albert Kesselring

Diplomacy games may contain lying, stabbing, or deliberately deceiving communications that may not be suitable for and may pose a hazard to young children, gullible adults, and small farm animals.
